I hate to say it but I was unimpressed with my meal. I ordered a combination plate that consisted of a chicken chile relleno, chicken enchilada and a beef chalupa. Not being really familiar with the names of Mexican dishes, I looked up the chile relleno. I became very interested in the dish as described by a quick web search..."chile pepper stuffed with chicken and cheese, rolled in a egg mixture with bread crumbs and fried". What I received was a barely cooked pepper sliced open with chicken laid on top with melted cheese. Totally different. The chicken enchilada was un-remarkable and the chalupa was "trippy". At first I was about to ask the waiter where my third item was but soon found out what I thought was garnish was actually my chalupa. A soggy fried tortilla with a pile of refried beans with gobs of lettuce and guac on top with a huge slice of tomato...not diced but just slapped on top! Overall, the raspberry Margarita and cheese dip with beef were the highlight of the meal. Probably won't return unless it is just for drinks and dip.

I was in town, needed a quick dinner, I love Mexican food, and this place was near my hotel. Even for someone who is pretty uncritical when it comes to Mexican food, I found this place to be pretty lacking when it came to the food. I walked in, and the place was hopping for a Wednesday night. I was alone, so I went to the back and sat alone at the bar (bar was unattended; I was the only one there). Service was pretty efficient; never really felt forgotten back there. Food was pretty lackluster, in my experience. I got a combination plate of tacos and enchiladas. Meat options were limited to ground beef or chicken; no shredded beef, pastor, etc. The taco was ground beef, and OK, but with a-too-perfect-to-be-homemade shell. Enchiladas were pretty bad. Shredded chicken wrapped in a plainly unfried (it was kind of dry) tortilla, covered in sauce. Having made enchiladas many times at home, I can tell you the tortilla should be lightly fried, and then the whole concoction should be baked...or at least heated up together. This was not, and could not have been, as my food came out about 5 minutes after I ordered it. I get that this shoddy enchilada work is a widespread crime-against-food, and in the grand order of things is not a high-ranking problem in our society, but personally it drives me crazy. Not recommended, but being from out-of-town I don't have a better local option to recommend.

I was heading back to the DC area after a business meeting across the Nice bridge, was starving, so I stopped here for a bite and to rest up a bit before driving back. The food was OK, not great, but there was no wait and the staff were friendly so it wasn't as bad as it could have been. I would recommend that they pay more attention to drinks and try to refill them. I realize that I was a single person dining alone and only drinking water with my meal, but I'd have tipped a little better if they'd come back even once to refill my drink. Next time through, I think I'll go elsewhere.

The 411: this is a decent restaurant where la plata locals eat semi-authentic Mexican food. Portions are big, and they serve alcohol. The staff are ethnically Mexican, and they are very friendly. The place is big too, so there's never a wait (unless it's cinco de mayo). The menu is big and they have a bunch of combo meals you can order. They give unlimited chips and salsa soon as you get there. It lacks cilantro, but their chips are alright. I recommend the fish tacos, the burrito grande, or the Texas fajitas. Those are my favorite meals there Their verdes are very good too. If you like that sour, tangy verde sauce, get it with enchiladas. You won't regret it. Bottom line: this place is good. It's better than the outback next door, and there's never a wait. Give this place your monetary support, and they'll give you a respectable meal.

Large portions for reasonable priced and equally delicious food. Decor is a bit updated but once you look past that the food and drinks will keep you coming back. On my last visit I had the arroz con pollo with a side of margarita. I was hungry that day but I didn't even finish the whole portion. Pieces of chicken, onions, and bell peppers mixed throughout the rice with melted cheese tying everything together. The margarita I had was good. A little on the stronger side than what I would expect from a $4 margarita, but I wasn't complaining. My boyfriend had the chicken fajitas which I had enjoyed the last time we were there. They come with all the fixings' and about 3 tortillas (which are too few for the amount of food served) Overall a good sit down place to wind down with friends or family over some good food.

Chicken Mole here! We ate here with our family on our first night in town. I ordered the combo with a beef enchilada and a taco. My dish was good but my husband's was great. Not many Mexican restaurants have a mole dish and it is my husband's weakness so he ordered the chicken mole. Their version was shredded chicken with a mole sauce. The restaurant was comfortable and festive. Our waitress was great and our glasses were always full.

2/27/14 La Tolteca in La Plata, Maryland... has not improved in all this time..the food continues to go down hill and not sure why. I had the Fajita Taco Salad with Shrimp. The grilled vegetables were soft and mealy, and the shrimp were colorless and fishy..unedible..even the once amazingly good salsa was mushy and not fresh..it reminded me of something poured from a jar, and the chips were stale not fresh.. I dont know what to say..how many more chances should a restaurant get? I still say they have the best margaritas anywhere, and once the food started to go downhill you could still go for them and the chips and salsa...but, now even that has gone the way of Bad Food Alley.. I suggest you go to El Dorado instead, which is only a stones throw from La Tolteca for the most amazing Mexican and or Spanish cuisine. The staff as well has become zombie like, unenthused, and nonchalant. Leaving La Tolteca, is like leaving a bad movie, with stale popcorn...blah...

This has got to be the worst Mexican restaurant I've visited in the US. Tasteless and lukewarm; it was barely edible. Tolteca must be the god of loose bowel movements, because he certainly visited me after my meal at this place. The one star is for the service; friendly and prompt, it was the only redeeming value of this restaurant.

After seeing on Urban Spoon that 93% liked it, it was an easy choice on our way home from DC. However, it turned out to be a bit of a let down. Should have checked the Yelp reviews before making our decision. The good: *Cheese dip with chorizo *Sangria The bad: *Our server was slow and didn't come around much. We sat there after we were done eating for at least 10 minutes before he came around for us to ask for our check, and the restaurant was not even close to busy. *I think my meal was called Enchiladas Chipotle. It was chicken enchiladas topped with queso. Sounded amazing, but It was very bland.

After reading the reviews I am wondering if I ate at the same place. My husband had the chicken mole and the mole was very good. I had a combo dinner and the beef was not greasy which was great. Our server was very nice and made sure I always had a full tea glass. Nothing is worse than running out of tea and still having half of your meal and your server now where in site. The hot sauce is really my only complaint. It was a little on the thin side and I prefer roasted peppers in my hotsauce but I'm nit picking that point.

The worst food I ever had. Sick for two days didn't eat leftovers. All the food in the different items used the same exact meat mixture little taste at all go up to the Mexican restaurant across from Andrews if you want some descent food.

Having been to the Waldorf location, we decided to check this one out en route home. This location is also in a mall, albeit a far newer and glossier one. We have to agree with Denise from the other review that this one is loud-and it was a Monday night. Here, however, we were seated immediately and our drink orders taken as the chips and salsa were served. The chips are more Chicago-styled Mexican as opposed to CA style-thinner, but strong enough not to break. The salsa is mild but good. Again I ordered chile verde-roasted pork cubes simmered in a tomatillo-cilantro sauce.YUM Jim got pollo poblano-here a shredded chicken version in a mild mole. The sides were nothing special and the flour tortillas too thick and chewy for my taste. With one Pacifico and a glass of burgundy (I know-what was I thinking? Should have had a beer or margarita!), the total for 2 before tip was under $25. Service here was better than the Waldorf location, but the room was too big, bright, and loud. We'll opt for Waldorf or Fairfax next time

I've been to La Tolteca about ten times. Nine times more than I'd choose, but unfortunately the place is popular with my workmates. I've tried most of the lunch specials, and a few regular orders. This place is a perfect example of the suckage of so-called "Tex-Mex" food on the East Coast. Food you're grandmother would make in Tennessee, nothing but salty, cheesy casseroles with flavorless ground beef and ketchup-based red sauces. "Tex-Mex" food really entails only two flavors: salty or sweet. There are no spices, and nothing really hot. And that describes the flavors you'll experience at La Tolteca: hallow and bland, with the nearly indiscernible tang of mild cheddar being the most dominant flavor. For most people living in Charles County, that will be sufficiently foreign, because by and large, people around here don't really want to eat anything too ethnic. My first time at La Tolteca, with a group of coworkers, I ordered a chicken mole burrito. For the rest of the lunch, my coworkers poked fun, and literally poked, at the mole sauce, derisively curious about the strange-looking substance, at the same time greedily dipping their chips into the appetizer dish of plastic white cheesy sauce. The mole was a very poor specimen: way too salty and smelling more of a burned oven than cloves and chocolate. They all ate one of the lunch specials, which are all the same exact thing with only slight variations: tortilla, cheese, minor amounts of meat, salty sauce, more cheese, bean pudding, rice, tomato, and dollops of sour cream and guacamole. Plenty of food--and perhaps this is the most important aspect when there's no need to exercise taste because everything is the same. The only thing I've had at this place that I'd get again is the fajitas. The sauteed peppers and onions were pretty good and the amount of meat is sufficient. But everything else I've had blows. Go to Eldorado instead. Pros: Service is prompt and efficient, especially considering the huge crowds they can get on weekday lunches. Cons: Not good Mexican food. Might be good Southern Maryland Tex-Mex food, whatever the hell that is.

Not a fan of La Tolteca. The guac was bland, the cheese dip runny, and the margaritas sickly sweet. Ordered shrimp and steak fajitas once and the shrimp had that frost bitten flavor....ew.

La Tolteca- maybe not your first choice for gourmet cooking, but here's a location who knows their clientele. Literally! I eat here probably a couple times a month, and the service is ALWAYS excellent. You're usually seated right as you walk in, and the tables/floors/dishes/bathroom, ect. ARE ALWAYS CLEAN! I think I've had a mix up with my order once, and they are so apt to take care of you! The food is your classic tex-mex faire, but the ingredients are fresh, the portions are huge, and the price can't be beat. I would most definitely recommended Tolteca to any one looking for a quick, warm, and delicious meal. To get what they paid for and more! Would consider coming for lunch, because while it never is overly crowded or noisy, you'll find a calmer and more relaxed atmosphere. Friendly, fun, fantastic. This is a location I will continue to go to, and as far as I'm concerned will never go out of style! In fact... I think I hear that taco salad calling my name now, and it's lunch time!
